More Pictures

Here are some more pictures. We’ve been lazy about posting them up lately. We got this new camera and have been taking a lot of pictures. But the pictures are much larger than what they used to be, so it takes longer to transfer, and thus I’ve gotten lazy.

Here are the pictures from today’s Kiddie Kandid session.

Hawaii Update

I’ve gotten too lazy to come up with a good name, so it will just be this.

Caleb is starting to hate the car again.  We don’t know if it’s the car itself, or if he’s not feeling well, or he simple chose to be whiny and cry-y, but he is.  It doesn’t help that we live out in the boonies, where everything is at least 30 minutes away.  It’s hit or miss with this boy now in the car.  And it’s usually a miss.  We now have to both sit in the front just so that he won’t think that we will take him out of the seat.  If his crying were only softer, maybe we wouldn’t mind it so much.  But boy, does Caleb have one good set of lungs.  Must get it from mommy.

Caleb had his first dip in the pool the other day.  And he had his first swim in the ocean yesterday.  That’s his pale chubby father holding him.

On that same day we went swimming, we saw a couple of humpback whales just outside our place.  You can see in the distance the whale blowing out air.

Here’s the beautiful sunset from our place.

Daddy got a little ambitious on our rest day and wanted to take a short stroll to L&L for a plate lunch.  That stroll turned out to be much further when you’re actually walking.  We stopped at McD’s instead.  Great idea.  You see this half-eaten apple pie…

IMG_0560

Yes, it’s fried.  And I thought these things only existed China now.  The only other thing I could notice different about McD’s in Hawaii is that they serve saimin.  Saimin?  No Taro pie?  No pineapple pie?

I can post pictures of my sexy wife in her swimsuit, but I won’t.  That’s for me and me alone!

We drove out to PCC today.  Not Pasadena Community College (Caleb was confused as well since he goes there every week), but Polynesian Cultural Center.  It’s a long drive.  For those of you who don’t know, Hawaii doesn’t have a lot of roads.  There’s one main road that goes around.  You can check out the map.  So we’re staying out in Waianae on the west coast.  If you look, North shore isn’t very far from us.  True.  We learned in geometry (or maybe even earlier) that the closest distance between two points is a line.  If you look even more closely, you can see that there are no roads from the west coast going anywhere but south.  So you must head south, get on the 1, then go back up north up the 2 in order to get to the north shore.  PCC is over in Laie, which is even further away.  So it’s quite a drive. We had to time it so that 90 minute drive coincided with Caleb’s nap.  Remember earlier how we said he wasn’t liking the car and it was hit or miss?  Today it was a hit, baby!

IMG_0602

(You notice the interstate highways as well?  That’s the first thing I noticed when I saw a map too.  Interstate freeways in Hawaii?  What other state can I drive to?  Oregon?)

Driving along the road to PCC was quite nice.  We were driving along the north shore, and during the winters the waves can be nasty.  This picture doesn’t do it justice from what we really saw.

IMG_0615

PCC was fun.  It was tiring with a baby though.  And the place is run by Mormons, so that’s not so fun.  But it was pretty entertaining.  I do enjoy learning about other cultures (although I didn’t learn that much today).  And it’s fun watching Yvonne participate in things like hula…

IMG_0638

twirling pois…

IMG_0650

And Caleb playing with sticks…

IMG_0647

Enough of that.  It’s time to sleep.  Yvonne isn’t not feeling well, so pray for all of us!  We’re going to need it if you want to see more of us doing silly things.  Or if you only want to watch Caleb playing on the ground in our apartment, then don’t pray.  We would certainly appreciate the prayer though.

All Messed Up

[Video updated in last post.  Go watch it]

For those of you who don’t know, we’re in Hawaii now.  Before we came on the trip, we decided that we’re not going to have Caleb on his set sleeping schedule, seeing how it’s 2 hours earlier here, and if we ever want to do anything at night, he has to break his sleep routine.  And I must say it has not been as bad as I expected.  Still it hasn’t been good.

The plane ride was good.  Caleb slept for a little over an hour during the 5+ hour flight.  He played most of the time.  We made sure to bring lots of toys.

IMG_0474

Caleb usually goes to sleep around 6-7pm and wakes up around 6am at home.  So here in Hawaii, that means he wants to sleep at 4-5 and wake up at 4am.  Not so good for him.  Not so good for us.  Since we’re changing his sleeping pattern anyways, we decided to keep him up the first night.  He went to sleep at 8:30pm local time the first night (that’s 10:30pm for him at home).  He was dead tired, and slept pretty well…  He only woke up once, but of course he woke up for good at 4:45am.  That’s a little tad early for us.  Again he slept at 8:30pm tonight. (He just woke up crying now at 10:52pm).  Hopefully he’ll have a good night the rest of the night.  Please God.  We like sleep.  We really do.

Even though Caleb still isn’t sleeping well, he’s trying.  He’s getting sleep wherever he can and without our help.  Much better than we thought he would do.  IMG_0478

 IMG_0487

Even when he’s not getting enough sleep, Caleb has been good for much of the last 2 days.  He’s usually terribly grumpy.  But he can just sit in the stroller for long periods and not say much at all.  What a trooper.

IMG_0490

Of course, Caleb’s schedule isn’t the only one that is messed up.  Today we ate lunch at 3pm, not cause we weren’t hungry.  I wanted Hawaiian food.  But I couldn’t find any place that would be satisfactory for me.  What kept us from dying was eating sundaes and fruit and yogurt parfaits and McDs.  And of course our favorite, Peeps.

IMG_0503

We did drove a lot today.  I, of course, was navigating, so that never turns out well, hence the 3pm lunch.  We finally found some authentic Hawaiian food at Wolf Gang Pucks.  Well not so much authentic, but it was still good nonetheless.

We spent much of the day in Waikiki.  I finally got my Hawaiian food for dinner at 9:30pm.  Yum.

IMG_0504

Other than that, we haven’t done too much.  Our condo is right next to the ocean.  We’re at the non-touristy side of the island.  The view is beautiful.

Must sleep now.  So tired.  Yawn.

7, 8, 15, 21, 6, 7, 2

Yvonne had posted earlier that Caleb was popping out teeth 3-6 on his top.  After that Yvonne told me that teeth number 7 and 8, the next 2 on the bottom don’t usually come out until 15-21 months.  That’s when the molars and canines come out around the same time too.  So we’re thinking another 5 months or so of good non-teething for our son.

So you know those lower teeth that aren’t suppose to show up until 15 months?  Well they’re here.  And yes.  That’s 6 teeth coming out at one time.  From 2 teeth to 8 teeth in 2 weeks.  No wonder he’s drooling so much.

So besides the teething, Caleb is also sick (as is the rest of the family).  He’s been sick since Wednesday.  He’s got a cold and can’t breathe through his nose well.  He’s been eating much less than he normally does since he’s been sick.

Not only is he teething and sick, but he’s also constipated.  Last night before we put our son to bed, we took his temperature.  As the thermometer was up his butt, Yvonne could feel the poop right on the edge.  So we helped him along.  Helped him along to about 7 inches of poop coming out.  Now for some of you, 7 inches of poop may not seem like much.   But you have to realize that my son is only 28 inches long.  That’s 1/4 his length.  Imagine Shaq dropping a 2 foot deuce.

Anything else besides teething, illness and constipation?  Yup!  He’s just started to crawl as well.  Well he’s not really crawling in your normal baby sense.  But he definitely scoots across the ground.

So what does this all add up to?  Well, Caleb since the beginning of the year has been sleeping extremely well for night time and for nap times as well.  It’s quite an amazing turn around that he’s had since his non-sleeping days, which lasted for his first 6 months.

Since Wednesday, his sleeping has been pretty bad.  It might be just the sickness messing with his sleep, but it could be and can be everything else that’s going on.  He’s slept some nights waking up only twice, and then some nights waking up every hour.  His naps have gone back to 30 minutes, rather than the 2 hours he had been getting consistently the previous month.

We know Caleb is going through a lot of stuff, but he needs sleep.  He gets sleep, then mommy and daddy get sleep.  If he doesn’t sleep, mommy doesn’t sleep and that doesn’t help anyone.

Please pray that Caleb will get healthy soon and return to his good sleeping patterns.  Please pray that these short naps don’t become a habit, and he’ll return to his long napping again.

Caleb eating Cheerios

So we got our new camera the other day.  Now we can take higher quality photos.  And higher quality videos.  Of course it goes up on youtube, so the quality doesn’t need to be that great anyways.

Here’s Caleb eating Cheerios for the first time.  I can’t get enough of this.  I’ll post more pictures and videos when I have time.

Pop Goes the Weasel

It was another rainy day here in LA.  So what does any normal family do on a rainy day?  Stay indoors and relax?

Nope.  Not this normal family.  Knowing we’d get a yelling by our parents in the future, we chose to go to Disneyland!  We bought a rain cover for the stroller for Caleb.  We got our new umbrella.  We had Caleb bundled up.  So we went prepared.

We enrolled Caleb in this music class that we go to every Saturday.  So they gave us a CD that we can listen to; songs that they use in the class.  One of the songs is "Pop Goes the Weasel."  Now most of you, I would imagine, probably don’t remember the lyrics to this song.  In fact, you probably only know the "Pop goes the weasel" part like me and Yvonne.

So we started listening closely to the lyrics and honestly, they didn’t make any sense to us.  First we couldn’t really understand what they were saying since the lyrics didn’t quite make sense to us.  So we looked up the song on wikipedia (I know wikipedia is frowned upon in the academic community, but they have almost always provided thorough and accurate information).  Here are the lyrics on our CD:

All around the cobbler’s bench
The monkey chased the weasel;
The monkey thought ’twas all in fun,
Pop! goes the weasel.

A penny for a spool of thread,
A penny for a needle—
That’s the way the money goes,
Pop! goes the weasel.

Now after reading this…  we still don’t know what it means.  We know that fairy tales had all these meanings used for teaching.  Real fairy tales were used to teach the children about certain things.  So was there some hidden meaning we were suppose to get out of this children’s song?  Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_Goes_the_Weasel to check out the meaning.

I got six new videos at http://youtube.com/linwong.  You can subscribe to my channel to get all the updates to the videos.  Here’s one of him jumping.

We shall be getting our new camera soon.  Should be much better pictures and much better video.

Google Juice

(Wow!  3 posts in a single day)

If you haven’t done it yet, you need to search your name in Google.  I do this every once in a while to see how I’m doing and see what page I land on ("Chris Wong," by the way, is the number 1 search result in Google now).

So I searched for "Caleb Joshua Wong", which is the number 1 result.  No problem there.  How about "Caleb Wong?"  Not on the first page…  Not on the second page…  Third page it’s on.  Not bad.  But not good enough.

So here’s where you can help.  Caleb needs some Google juice.  Referrals to this website.  That’s what we need.  Help Caleb be number 1 in Google just like his daddy.

Super Bowl

For the past maybe 15 or so years I have watched the Super Bowl live.  I remember cheering for the Bills against Dallas, and Michael Jackson playing in the halftime show.  Since then, I have not missed a single Super Bowl.  We’ve had some good parties, some good days watching with few others, and then there is the Super Bowl party ruined by someone who says they’re going to bring drinks, but then doesn’t show up leaving everyone thirsty or drinking water.

This year is going to be different.  Weekends are times I get to spend with my family.  And now that Caleb is around, I’ve chosen to spend that time with him instead of watching the Super Bowl.  So what are we planning to do this year?  We’re doing what the Super Bowl MVP is doing, going to Disneyland of course.

You have to love PVRs (e.g. Tivo) though.  After Caleb goes to bed, it’s time to watch the Super Bowl 3 hours delayed. So I don’t want to get any phone calls, or text messages or any contact from you people who have watched the Super Bowl already.  I’m going to watch it straight through, commercials and all, after my boy is asleep.  And then I can cheer quietly as the Giants beat the Patriots.
